Spain Summary

Located in Western Europe on the Iberian Peninsula, Spain is a treasure chest of unforgettable scenery.  Separating Spain from France, the snow-capped Pyrenees, as well as having breathtaking views, offer resorts like La Molina and Panticosa with plenty of opportunities for skiing.  In the north, the winding rivers and green forests of Galicia present a picture not usually associated with Spain, and in complete contrast to the Moorish-influenced south, Galician cultures traces its routes to a Celtic origin.  Everywhere are reminders of Spain’s rich and varied past, from the Alhambra in Granada to Don Quixote’s windmills in La Mancha

The cities such as Toledo, Barcelona, Salamanca and Madrid mix old with new as celebrated museums, galleries and Baroque churches rub shoulders with thumping discos and blaring bars. What will never change is the Spaniards' passion for partying. Snack on tapas as you hop from bar to bar, before heading off to enjoy Spain's renowned nightlife. Then revitalise the senses - Spain’s cultural heritage brims with flamenco, opera, painting, bullfighting, sport and flashy fiestas.

With so much to offer it is no wonder that Spain is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.

The Costa del Sol which translates as “Sunny Coast” is a region in the south of Spain, comprising of costal towns and communities along the Mediterranean coastline of Málaga province and the eastern edge of the Càdiz province.  During the latter part of the 20th century the region has been completely transformed into a tourist destination of world renown. The area was discovered and developed to meet the demands of international tourism in the 1950s and has since been a very popular destination for foreign tourists not only for its beaches but also for its local culture.  The area is particularly famous for its towns like Marbella, which provides the Costa del Sol with its reputation for being a playground for its super-rich and famous visitors.

In recent years the Costa del Sol has become known to golf enthusiasts as the 'Costa Del Golf' due to the number of high quality golf courses many of which are centered around Marbella. Possibly the most popular sport in Andalucia, it is undoubtedly the most popular “visitor” sport, consequently resulting in an increase in development of new complexes to house the number of golfers visiting the area.
Cabo de Gata, in Almeria, and Almuñecar on the Costa Tropical are particularly good for scuba diving.
Travel east and the coastline from Malaga, it’s jagged and hosts a variety of underwater landscapes and marine life. The waters near Gibraltar are well-known for having a number of interesting shipwrecks.

Marine life is plentiful be expecting to see conger eels, squid, cuttlefish, spider crabs, lobster, trigger fish, sunfish, dolphins and maybe even a whale or two! There are plenty of dive schools on both the Atlantic and Mediterranean side of Andalucía’s coastline. Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) is the more popular diving school and comes highly recommended.

You can even go skiing at Sierra Nevada which is located in the Penibetic mountain range in Andalucia. It is Europe’s southernmost ski resort and is endowed with the Iberian Peninsula’s highest summits. The resort is situated in the municipalities of Monachil, Guejar Sierra and Dilar near Granada’s Costa Tropical (100 km.) and the Costa del Sol (150km.). The resort’s village, Pradollano is at an altitude of 2,100 meters.

The Costa del Sol also offers beautiful beaches, magnificent marinas and numerous shopping centres. For families there are various theme, water & safari parks, you can take up ice-skating or go-karting or just stroll through the many beautiful public gardens.
Spain has many international airports and is accessible all year round from most European countries - reachable in little more than two hours 30 minutes.
Parents with young children looking for a better quality of life can expect a high standard of education and health. There are a many international schools which offer a very good education and according to the World Health Organisation statistics the Spanish healthcare system is 6th in the world. (The UK lags at a lowly 24th)
