You can fly direct to Tangiers Airport from a number of International Airports, alternatively fly to Malaga or Gibraltar and take the inexpensive ferry from either Algeciras or Tarifa to Tangiers. The “Freedom of the Sky’s” agreement offered Moroccan airspace to the budget airlines at the end of 2006, therefore Ryan Air, Easy Jet and Monach are all offering low-cost flights from many major airports.
You can reach Asilah from Tangiers in around 30 minutes via the new motorway, there are plenty of taxi’s or hire cars available to make this trip. Alternatively you can take a bus or train.
Asilah is a pretty coastal town, rich in history with a population of around 20.000. First impressions are of the wonderful ramparts and turrets built by the Portuguese in the 1500’s. The town is completely surrounded by these Portuguese defensive walls. There are extensive beaches and a natural harbour on the northwest side of the town. The town is surrounded by farmland with no factories in the immediate vicinity. To the north of Asilah lie many beautiful beach resorts. This northern Atlantic coastal area falls into the Mediterranean climate zone bringing mild wet winters and dry warm summers. The presence of the Atlantic creates more rainfall than in the other Mediterranean areas.
The Mayor of Asilah is also the Moroccan Ambassador to the USA and during the late 1970’s this forward thinking man inaugurated an annual Summer Arts Festival. This was attended by approximately 30,000 musicians, painters, poets and writers from all over the world where the streets are painted by artists.
The financial impact of both tourism and the arts festival has transformed Asilah and the town is now spotless and flourishing. With infrastructures improving King Mohammed VI hopes to increase tourism to 10 million visitors annually by the year 2010. |
